‘Mechanical objectivity’ refers to the idea that what the camera sees or captures is true or based in truth. Whereas traditional art mediums such as painting or sculpture are the product of what an artist can imagine or think and the artists’ technical ability, photography is instead based is based in capture of the real or physical world. Tracing Adam (2024) is a series of photographs captured on an ordinary digital camera, and thus photographs based in fact. However, the images use alternative photographic processes by being plotted on a mechanical penplotting device, where each gesture and mark isn’t a strict documentation of the sitter. The resulting images don’t necessarily relay the person who sat before me, but rather are objects which contain my interpretation and construction of reality.
